Welcome to the Land of Purple

Loren Fisher Welcome to the Land of Purple, or translated, one could say the Land of the Phoenicians and Canaanites. The basic meaning of the place name Phoenicia is "purple dye," which the Phoenicians made from a sea snail, the Murex. The meaning of Canaan may be the "West or the place of the setting sun," but it also has been used to describe wool that is dyed purple in Canaan. For me, the Land of Purple must also include others, who made a tremendous impact on this land: from the North, the Hittites; from the South, the Egyptians; from the East, the Babylonians; and from the West the Mycenaean and Sea Peoples.

Here is what you can find in the Land of Purple. You will find fact and fiction. I try to get the historical documents, be they poetry or prose, and the embedded facts right. I also translate ancient fiction and write modern fiction that allows the reader to experience what life was probably like and what some of these people accomplished in this land 2500 to 3500 years ago. This is a never-ending adventure, because we never know enough though we live in an age of discovery. It is exciting.

How is this site arranged? You are at our Home page, and you can learn some additional facts about Loren Fisher by going to my Personal Notes. There I will give you a few more details about my life, and I will attempt to share with you why I write about such ancient subjects. Also you can see at the Gallery some photos and illustrations by John Fisher. If you go to The Books, you will find my descriptive comments on the books that I have published since 2000. I have published essays and books prior to 2000, but they are technical publications to be used rather than read. You will be able to see what I am working on at the present time by turning to What's New? I will also report on possible future projects.
