And No One Laughed
I quote from the Washington Post but you can read it anywhere,
"This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous," Bush said. "And having said that, all options are on the table."
President Bush said this while meeting with NATO and European Union leaders and no one laughed, at least not then. I know no one laughed because I heard his remarks on the evening news. And it sounded funnier to the ear than it does when one reads it. The goal here is clear, to set the nervous Europeans at ease while worrying the Iranians. But couldn't there be some way of doing this that did not strain language to the breaking point. Unless, of course, attacking Iran is not the only ridiculous option that is on the table.
And of course, the US is getting ready to attack Iran, at least at the level of having contingency plans in case Iran attacks Iraq or Israel for example. Come on. This is another case of Bush torturing language while trying to say two contradictory things at the same time and if it wasn't so serious, it would sure be funny.
