It's All About Political Posturing on Abortion

The Daily Kos has it right; the Schiavo political sideshow is about abortion rights. Nothing more and nothing less. Don't get me wrong; I believe that Terry Schiavo's permanent vegetative state is an almost unbearable tragedy for her husband and her parents. While it is easy to have clear objective opinions if one is not involved, I'm not all together sure how I would behave if I was under that emotional pressure for a decade and a half with an army of people telling me what is, in their option, the right thing to do. I hope I could be rational, but I'm not sure.

But it is beyond dispute that the tragedy endured by her family has been highjacked to advance the cause of a narrow political agenda. These folks don't care about Terry Schiavo. They care about limiting the rights of women to choose. They don't care about Ms Shiavo's wishes. They care about getting a political advantage.

I have resisted writing about this because until major politicians got into it,it was none of my business. Likewise, it is none of the business of those who want to make political hay of a family tragedy. For this reason I may be among the last in the blogosphere to comment on this subject.

But this is without doubt about abortion.

Even Fox News could to figure this one out;

Bush's remarks regarding the Schiavo case have been couched in his "culture of life" language, a phrase the president has previously adopted to describe his anti-abortion views.

Remember, anytime you hear the code phrase "culture of life" translate it into "anti-choice."

If you don't like it polished up and encoded, try this from ACLU, PC, NOW and other worthless acronyms;

Maybe you have heard of the procedure where women can get rid of their unborn children because they don't want them or they are going to be a burden. Well, Terri Schiavo's husband is simply having an abortion. He doesn't want Terri anymore, she has become a burden, so, instead of seeking an appropriate alternative, he has been seeking a way to get rid of her.

There is a shocking inability to understand that Michael Schiavo just may be taking a moral position. But then, it's not about him either.

Or this from the now well known Republican talking points document,

This is an important moral issue and the pro-life base will be excited that the Senate is debating this important issue.

According to the N Y. Times , Christopher Shay understands what this is about.

"My party is demonstrating that they are for states' rights unless they don't like what states are doing," said Representative Christopher Shays of Connecticut, one of five House Republicans who voted against the bill. "This couldn't be a more classic case of a state responsibility."

"This Republican Party of Lincoln has become a party of theocracy," Mr. Shays said. "There are going to be repercussions from this vote. There are a number of people who feel that the government is getting involved in their personal lives in a way that scares them." [Emphasis added]

How long are we going to let this non-sense continue?

[P.S. I'm still working on the boring post I mentioned yesterday. I'm hoping it will become more interesting over night.]
