Two Abnormally Interesting Items
A few days ago, I posted a little study on "kinds" as used in the Hebrew Bible and "species" as used in science. Organic Matter reports on and discusses an article at Philosophy Now. This article, by Massimo Pigliucci, mentions still another work that counted ". . . 21 different concepts of species proposed in the literature!" In my post I indicated three definitions. I was only 18 short. As the saying goes, "It comes to a little bit more than I figured." Both the Organic Matter post and the Philosophy Now post are well worth reading.
On another front, the Leiter Report, Preposterous Universe and Dispatches from the Cultural Wars report on a case of unusual candor. It seems that one Rev. Ray Mummert of Dover Pennsylvania, speaking of the teaching of evolution, told an AFP reporter,
We've been attacked by the intelligent, educated segment of the culture.
There is nothing that can be added to that.
