Am I Missing Something? Over 10K Arrests for Publicity?
I read that the US Marshal's office has captured 10340 fugitives of which 1459 seem to be extremely dangerous people.
- 162 accused or convicted of murder
- 638 wanted for armed robbery
- 553 wanted for rape or sexual assault
- 106 unregistered sex offenders
You can read about it here and here and here and here and here. You can read what the US Marshals Office says about it on their web site.
This was all done as part of a one-week sweep. My question is, "Did the Marshal's Service know where this folks were and wait until the big sweep to arrest them?" The answer seems to be, "yes." I quote from CNN.
Officials insist the operation was strictly designed to carry out law enforcement objectives but acknowledge the scope of the operation was expected to prompt positive publicity. In addition, one official said the operation, originally considered for later this spring, was timed in part to coincide with "Crime Victims Rights Week."
If this is correct, the marshal's office decided to wait to arrest these 1456 dangerous criminals and another 9,000, perhaps not so dangerous, criminals for the publicity.
I am, by trade, a marketer. I appreciate timing as a marketing tool. However, I find no redeeming value in leaving over 1000 dangerous criminals on the street until the appropriate marketing opportunity comes alone.
