There Ought Not to be a Law

Call, write, or email your Senator and tell them to delete section 108 of S536 (Native American Omnibus Act of 2005). You can find their contact information at the Senate web site. This bill amendments federal law requiring archaeologists to turn over human skeletons found on federal land to American Indian tribes by changing the definition of "Indian Tribe." The underling legislation should be repealed but this amendment makes that law worse rather than better. The new proposed law greatly expands the meaning of "Indian Tribe" so that archeologist must turn over any skeleton, no matter how old, found on federals lands any tribe that requests it.

Timothy Sandefur of Freespace tells the complete story at The Panda's Thumb. You will also find the comment posted there by Danial Hocson very instructive.

This law panders to the creationism of some American Indians. More importantly, it stifles legitimate researcher into the history of Native Americans and North America. Remember Kennewick Man. More of this kind of anti-science will result if S536 section 108 becomes law.
