It's Worth A Try
The James Randi Educational Foundation has offered the Smithsonian Institute $20,000.00 not to allow the showing of the Discovery Institutes creationist film "The Privileged Planet: The Search for Purpose in the Universe." I wrote about the Discovery Institute's publicity coup and their subsequent lies other day.
Randi suggests the following:
Please send an e-mail to giving@si.edu addressed to Mr. Randall Kremer, Public Affairs. Tell him of your concern over this situation. And, you might add that the JREF is willing to donate $20,000 to the Smithsonian Institution if they agree to give back the "Discovery Institute" $16,000 and decline to sponsor the showing of the film. And the JREF will not require the Smithsonian to run any films or propaganda that favor our point of view.
I just sent such an email. I doubt that any amount of money can stop this showing. I imagine that the Smithsonian is caught in a consistent public use issue where they cannot deny the Discovery Institute because they once, I don't know when or where, allowed another outside organization to rent their auditorium. However, if we can force them to repeatedly make a very strong statement about the role of the Smithsonian and the creationist goals of the Discovery Institute it will go some way in neutralizing the negative effect of agreeing to show this film in the first place.
