Guffa Blogging

This is a guffa.

Anyone who has ever been on an excavation will know its many charms. The rest of you only need to know that it is a dirt bucket used to carry the fill matrix out of the excavation area. I found this great picture and it brought back memories, some of them good.

Is that made of leather? I want one. Where can I get one? The greatest paleontologist that ever lived was Otto Schinedwolf and the greatest physical anthropologist was Robert Broom. They were both rabid anti-Darwinians naturally.

oops That is Schindewolf.

Sorry John, no leather. As far as I know, all guffas are made of rubber with a fabric core somewhat like the base material for tires. They are typically held together with small bolts and nuts. As to your other points: I'm not sure who my candidates for greatest paleontologist and greatest physical anthropologist would be. Broom was very influential and he make Dart a hero. Any theoretical confusion on his part was more broadly shared among scientists at the time than it is now. I am not sufficiently knowledgeable of Schindewolf's work and that alone would make me fell he was not very influential. I believe he was a saltationist, which is indeed anti-Darwinian and not accepted by any competent biologist today. But then I don't read as much straight paleontology as I do physical anthropologist. All this is a little off topic. As far as I know, no guffa has ever expressed an opinion on evolution or creationism. If you know of one that did, please tell me about it. On the other hand, the name of God has often come up as excavators addressed guffas.
