Another Minor Milestone

At about 6:57 this morning Abnormal Interests logged its five thousandth visitor. Back on April 13, 2005 when it logged its one thousandth visitor, I threatened that I would write another one of these updates at this milestone. These numbers are about where I hoped Abnormal Interest would be after four and a half months of operation. Remember, February 16, 2005 is Abnormal Interests' official birthday.

There were several important events in May and June. On May 23rd PZ Myers picked Abnormal Interests as one of his three "Weblogs of the Week" on Pharyngula. Thanks PZ. The Tulsa Zoo post drove our single day total to 142 visitors on June 9 thanks again to a trackback from PZ's site. By June 17th Abnormal Interests had had 1000 visitors for the month. On June 24, there were 216 visitors, the most ever for a single day. The pace continued and June saw a total of 2060 visitors.

My post on "The Crucifixion of Sister Maricica Irina Cornici." drove much of the June volume. It drew well over two hundred visitors via Google. Other posts that got many Google hits were "A Euphemism for Pudenda," "An Ancient Euphemism for Penis Johnson" and "The Number of the Beast - 616." The first two represent my brief adventure into Biblical soft porn and the last combined interest in the sign of the beast with surprisingly significant interest in the Oxyrhynchus Papyri. The several posts on the James Ossuary continue to draw visitors.

Posts that attracted the interests of visitors who came to the site via syndication, bookmarks or links from another site included "Varnishing the Wedge," "Thou Shall Not Take The Name Of Intelligent Design In Vain", "Creationists Have Fun and Our Children Suffer" and "The Economics of Neanderthal Extinction." There are now 213 posts in Abnormal Interests' archives.

I think all this is a good start for a non-academic blog that does not focus on any single thing but moves with the whims of its owner/operator. I want to give a special thanks to my growing list of regular readers. Please feel free to drop me a note or comment now and then. I promise not to bother you with any more of this kind of silliness until Abnormal Interests hits 10,000 visitors.
