Now John McCain Wants to Teach Creationism

In an article on John McCain's presumed presidential ambitions, the www.arizonastar.com reports the following

On Tuesday, though, he sided with the president on two issues that have made headlines recently: teaching intelligent design in schools and Cindy Sheehan, the grieving mother who has come to personify the anti-war movement.

McCain told the Star that, like Bush, he believes "all points of view" should be available to students studying the origins of mankind.

Assuming the report accurately reflects McCain's position, I'm confused by this report. In fact, those who want to teach all points of view but single out only one always confuse me. McCain says he wants all points of view concerning the origins of mankind made available to students. At the same time, he apparently singled out Intelligent Design creationism for special mention. Does he or the President for that matter really think that there are just two points of view on the origin of mankind, Intelligent Design and modern science? The fact is there are hundreds of stories about how our species came to be. Any one of them could be taught as an alternative to modern science. Any one of then would also be a distraction in the science classroom. I recently did a post on American Indian views concerning creation. And there are hundreds of such stories from all over the world.

I just don't believe that he wants "all points of view" taught. If he does, I'll bet he doesn't want them all taught in a science class. So why select just one? Because it is politically expeditious to do so. And that is a morally bankrupted position. As much as I admire much of John McCain's candor and clarity, he is just plan wrong on this one.
