The Devil You Say!
Intelligent design creationists are always cagey when it comes to who or what the intelligent designer might be. They know if they say "God" they have clearly crossed the line between a religious belief and what just might be acceptable under the law in our schools. They also know that this will expose them as the creationists that they are. So they have agreed to almost anything that might be more intelligent then humans, on the assumption A) that there must be something that is and B) that that entity has had opportunity to be involved in the process.
Kevin B. Powell wrote a letter to the editor of the Los Angeles Times that suggests an intelligent designer that had I had not heard of.
It seems that "'Intelligent Design' Gets Bush's Nod" (Aug. 2). This is the theory that the world was created by an "intelligent designer," i.e., God. Mark Twain is credited with saying that "the devil created the world the second God wasn't looking." I wonder if our fundamentalist friends would approve of the teaching of the demonic design theory?
I'm not so sure Mark Twain actually said such a thing. I can't find the quote, but it does sound like him. This expression is sometimes used to describe a Gnostic belief. But even in the case of Gnostism, it is not quite right. Details of the source of the quote aside, the idea is delightful.
