The Discovery Institute's List Grows Shorter
Richard Hoppe on The Panda's Thumb and Ed Brayton on Dispatches from the Culture Wars direct us to an article in the Seattle Times about Bob Davidson, a retired nephrology professor and a devout Christian, who had his name taken off the list of some 400 people with science degrees who signed a Discovery Institute document that says the following:
We are skeptical of claims for the ability of random mutation and natural selection to account for the complexity of life. Careful examination of the evidence for Darwinian theory should be encouraged
Davidson told the Seattle Times,
"When I joined I didn't think they were about bashing evolution. It's pseudo-science, at best ... What they're doing is instigating a conflict between science and religion."[snip]
I'm kind of embarrassed that I ever got involved with this"
[snip]
"It's laughable: There have been millions of experiments over more than a century that support evolution," he says. "There's always questions being asked about parts of the theory, as there are with any theory, but there's no real scientific controversy about it."
[snip]
It just clicked with me that this whole movement is wrongheaded on all counts," Davidson said. "It's a misuse of science, and a misuse of religion."
The Seattle Times article as well as Hoppe's and Brayton's pieces deserve reading.
