FEMA, Pat Robertson and Katrina
Now that the major news services are noticing the FEMA - Pat Robertson connection, FEMA has updated their website. The fact that Operation Blessing was listed on FEMA's website as one, of at first two, then three charities listed at the top of the page as places to donate support to Katrina recovery has been well documented many places. I saw it myself.
As ABC reported,
According to its most recent filing with the Internal Revenue Service, Operation Blessing gave more than half of its yearly allocation of cash donations -- $885,000 -- to the Christian Broadcasting Network, or CBN, of which Robertson is also the chairman."There is no accountability when you have two boards working hand in hand like this," said Henderson. "One never knows when you're contributing to Operation Blessing whether the money is really going to the hurricane victims, or whether it's going to pay for some more television time for Pat Robertson's television show."
Bill Horan, the charity's president, says it was an "accounting issue."
Here is another voice from the same ABC piece,
Based on their track record, I would say that, as an individual, I would not give to Operational Blessing," admitted the Rev. Charles Henderson, a Presbyterian minister, who is the executive director of the Association for Religion and Intellectual Life.[snip]
"There is no accountability when you have two boards working hand in hand like this," said Henderson. "One never knows when you're contributing to Operation Blessing whether the money is really going to the hurricane victims, or whether it's going to pay for some more television time for Pat Robertson's television show.
Well, it appears FEMA has seen their own error and replaced the web page with one that directs readers who want to make a cash donation to the USA Freedom Corporation site. This may be good, but in so doing, they also deleted reference to the Red Cross and other legitimate agencies from their list of places where one can contribute. As of this posting, the page in question on FEMA's site was last updated yesterday, September 11, 2005 at 1:13 PM.
It's truly an ill wind that doesn't blow someone some good.
