Giving Continuing Assistance to Katrina's Victims
Different people will likely do different things. I view the problem as at least a two-phased issue. First, there are the immediate needs of the victims. While I've never been a great fan of the Red Cross , they seem to be doing a very commendable job in this case and, for my money, they are still the best choice for initial donations.
But while the short-term issues are horrific, continuing needs will be around for a long time and many of the current issues will evolve from "first aid" to rebuilding. In this second phase, Habitat for Humanity or something like it may be a good.
I know many of you have already contributed. But think of it as the first installment in an ongoing project that may require support from several different directions as we move forward.
Just a reminder, unless you can volunteer your own time and/or services, money, because it is so portable, works better than any other donation.
