More on the New Bulla from Jerusalem
Jim Davila of PaleoJudaica leads us to an Ha'aretz article in Hebrew about the bulla I mentioned a couple of days ago. In that post I said, "Barkay (the discoverer) apparently thinks it may come from the time of David." The Ha'aretz article makes it clear that it is from the "dynasty of David" (בית דוד). And that could cover a lot of time. The picture in the article is of a good sized piece of paper with the very small broken bulla in the middle. It appears to be less than one centimeter across and one third to one half of it is missing. Apparently, the break cuts through the three lines of writing.
The Ha'aretz article tells us, according to Jim Davila, that a name on it ends in "-yahu" (יהו-). This is a very common theophoric element in names from the Hebrew Bible and elsewhere in the region. It is likely the name of a relatively high level person. But even if it turns out to be the same name as one we know from the Bible, it need not be the same person.
I tried to enhance the image but with only 648 pixels (24X27) total to work with there wasn't much I could do.
