What Do 34,785 Lobbyists Do?

I am often wrong when it comes to the scale of sizes of various populations. But this from George Will's column in this week's Newsweek moggles the bind.
Since 2000 the number of registered lobbyists in Washington has more than doubled, from 16,342 to 34,785. They have not been attracted to the seat of government, like flies to honey, for the purpose of limiting government.
34,785 registered lobbyists in Washington. That's larger than the population of Claremont, California just to the north of us (33,998 in 2004) or Kent, Ohio where our daughter lives (27,742 in 2002). It's one thousand more people than live in Beverly Hills (33,784).
Could someone please tell me what they all do? How do they spend their days? How do they spend $2.1 billion, a year? Don't get me wrong. The 16,342 registered lobbyists that said goodbye to the Clinton administration and greeted the Bush Administrating in 2000 is also an obscene number of voices mostly not of the people.
The charts on the left are from a June 22, 2005 Washington Post article.
