How Best to Spend a Saturday Morning

Yesterday I spent the morning with PZ Meyers, who was visiting Los Angeles for a science and blogging meeting at USC the previous day. Bruce Breece, John, Don Frack, Troy Britain, PZ and I wandered around the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County for a couple of hours. PZ has some pictures and a write up at Pharyngula.

I agree with PZ the Collapse exhibit was disappointing but I'm not sure we gave it its due. We walked through it while we were getting acquainted and I don't think we took too much time to look at the various displays and presentations. The one we did spend some time with was clearly targeted for kids.

The insect zoo was great. Tory Britain and particularly Don Frack have extensive knowledge of insects and of the Museum itself. Great fun.

It was interesting to see what PZ photographed. The hall that houses the insect zoo on a mezzanine also has an extremely large whale skeleton that has been at the museum since I was a kid. PZ took a photo of its vestigial hind limbs. He also took pictures of the various fossil specimens at the exhibit on the evolution of the horse.

Unfortunately, I was unable to stay and meet Andy Groves and go to the Museum of Jurassic Technology and then the Page Museum.
