Happy New Year
I've been looking for something appropriate to ring out 2005 and ring in 2006. Being unable to find anything that I really liked, I decided to quote this passage from the Ugaritic Ba'al cycle.
What foes have risen up against Ba'al,
(what) enemies against the rider of the clouds?
Indeed, I have struck down Yam, beloved of El,
made an end of Nahar, the might god.
I have even muzzled the dragon, I decreed his fate and
struck down the slippery serpent,
the cursed one with seven heads.
(KTU 1:3 III:37 - 42)
Yes, if this is actually part of a new year's ritual or myth as is often thought, it is a spring new year rather than a winter new year. And while I don't normally encourage this sort of thing, you might want to substitute the names of your favorite politicians for the gods mentioned in the poem. Depending on your orientation, it may be a summary of 2005 or a wish for 2006.
Have a Fulfilling and Happy 2006 and remember that happiness depends on having the right mix of abnormal interests.
