Juan Cole on the "Top Ten Myths about Iraq in 2005"
Juan Cole has posted the "Top Ten Myths about Iraq in 2005." Aside from debunking these myths his post also provides an excellent short summary of the current state of affairs in Iraq and of the current debate on the war here in the United States.
On the one hand, some of the "myths" he lists are those often championed by people who support the war.
1. The guerrilla war is being waged only in four provinces.2. Iraqi Sunnis voting in the December 15 election is a sign that they are being drawn into the political process and might give up the armed insurgency.
7. The new Iraqi constitution is a victory for Western, liberal values in the Middle East.
On the other hand, some are favorite spins of those who champion immediate withdrawal from Iraq are listed.
3. The guerrillas are winning the war against US forces.8. Iraq is already in a civil war, so it does not matter if the US simply withdraws precipitately, since the situation is as bad as it can get.
Anyone who seeks his or her own independent evaluation of where we are and what we should do now should read Cole's whole list and his reasons for thinking them myths. In fact, they should read Cole's blog everyday. It is one of the best resources on the web. I liked Coles review because it tended to reinforce some of my own beliefs that I have posted elsewhere. The differences between Juan Cole and me is that he actually knows something about the Iraq and I just have beliefs.
