The President's Number One Priority

In answer to a question about reports that the President authorized the National Security Administration to eavesdrop without a warrant on people in the United States, Scott McClellan, the White House Press Secretary, said in part,

We are continuing to do all we can to save lives. That is the President's number one priority. We are sitting here talking about waging the war on terrorism. And the President is going to continue to act to protect the American people, but he'll do so within our laws. And in terms of these issues, there is congressional oversight of intelligence activities, and we will continue to work with members of Congress on those matters. [White House Release , emphasis added]

Well, if that is the President's number one priority, he should be impeached without further ado. According to his oath of office, his number one priority is to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

It's not that I think saving lives is unimportant but it is not and should never become any President's number one priority.
