Violence and Intelligent Design
Several people have written on this. You can find the news account at The Lawrence Journal-World. Since, I copped the heart of my headline from Alun, I might as well use most of his opening paragraph also.
. . . the Chair of Religious Studies at KU, Paul Mirecki, has been attacked by a couple of Kansans who thought Mirecki was simply too scary to attack alone.
Mirecki had said some things in public about fundamentalists that are best not said in that way and has since apologized for them but that didn't keep him from being beaten up by a couple of thugs.
Were his attackers encouraged into doing this by at State Senator? Well here are the words of State Senator Kay O’Connor, R-Olathe uttered on November 29, six days before Mirecki was beaten.
If a person has hate in his heart and says something hateful and later apologizes, do you think the hatred in his heart has been mended? I’m surprised that something more severe isn’t happening to this teacher who obviously has a hatred for Christians. [The Lawrence Journal-World]
Her words speak for themselves. Whatever happened to "love your enemies?"

Do we even know that he was actully beaten? Could be a hoax.

Well, within certain well-known constraints, all things are possible. However, the news reports are pretty convincing. The police seem to be convinced. I may be wrong, but I worry that the same misguided spirit that lead State Senator Kay O’Connor to her ill-advised remarks motivates the very question of a hoax.

Honestly, his injuries are more consistent with falling forward and landing on his face than with a beating. Had two pickup driving rednecks beaten him, his injuries would have been far worse. I would expect broken bones, even internal injuries. Instead, he has a mark under his eye and a chipped tooth.
Could be that he was drunk or high and fell down. Maybe his girlfriend shoved him to the ground. Maybe he was an early morning peeping tom who fell off his perch. There's many possibilities.
I doubt that the mythical pickup driving rednecks will ever be found, especially since they are probably only figmants of his imagination.
mirecki may be seriously delusional and in need of the services of a psychiatric hospital.

Are you an MD and did you examine Prof. Mirecki? If not, how on earth can you know such a thing? It also sounds like there is an implication that you think his injuries should have been far worse. Be careful, there is a very narrow line between a threat and an observation. By the way, did you use a phony email address to post your comment? The one you gave is very hard to believe. If it turns out to be phony, I will band you from my sight for violating my comment rules.
