Friday Snow Blogging

The other day Aydin Örstan directed us to Blue Snow and Red Snow and showed us his own yellow snow. Well not exactly his own yellow snow but some yellow snow near his home. And while Aydin's snow is now gone it will return. I thought I'd show you my favorite kind of snow: distant snow.

Mount Baldy

It's a little hazy but you get the idea. This is Mount San Antonio, better known as Mount Baldy, in the San Gabriel Mountains. I took this picture a few blocks from our house at about 1:30 this afternoon. It was a little over 80o F at the time. The snow on Baldy was even more impressive a couple of days ago and it was a little clearer also but I didn't have my camera with me. We can't really see it from our house due to a large building that sits in the way. Mount San Antonio is famous for, among other things, being one of the locations where Albert A. Michelson installed rotating mirrors to measure of the speed of light in 1926. The other location was Mount Wilson where Michelson has a laboratory.

The point I want to make is that here in Southern California we love the snow. We go to the snow; we ski; we snowboard, we even engage in old-fashioned snowball fights and build snowmen. We go to the snow; it doesn't come to us!

When I first read this post I thought, "No, distant snow, it sounds nice, but it's not for me." But freakish weather this week is taking our snow, making the idea of more reliable, if distant, mountain-top snow much more appealing.
