Knock it Off Already!

I first heard this on the radio but it wasn't until I read it in an Associated Press story that it really hit me.

"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin [mayor of New Orleans], who is black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day.

"Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves."

When a statement like this comes from Pat Robertson it is a little hard not to laugh. But when it comes from a political leader, it is down right annoying. While I agree and support the substantive parts of Mayor Nagin's statement wrapping it in mythological language does no good and perpetuates ideas that no one should perpetuate.
