Something New (To Me) - Old Maps
Aydin Örstan's Snail's Tales has one of the most interesting blogs that I read nearly every day. It's not that I'm all that interested in snails, although I'm beginning to get the warm fuzzes, or should I say the cold slimies, about them. It's that Aydin often approaches his subjects in a particularly fascinating way. Today's post Istanbul is no exception.
But what really caught my eye was his use of an old map of Istanbul that he got from David Rumsey's amazing online collection of old maps. I was not familiar with Rumsey's site and it is great fun to browse. The earliest maps go back to 1700 like this one from Guillaume de Lisle's "L'Amerique Septentrionale". At least, that's the short title. The long title is L'Amerique Septentrionale. Dressee sur les observations de Mrs. de l'Academie Royale des Sciences, & quelques autres, & sur les Memoires les plus recens. Par G. de l'Isle, Geographe.

If you visit the site, you will see that this map can be made very big.
I also enjoyed this map of Palestine from 1833.

The problem with a site like this is you can waste a whole afternoon going from one fascinating map to another.
