Even You and I Can Now Read PaleoAnthropology for Free

PaleoAnthropology the official Journal of the Paleoanthropology Society is now available on line free of charge. This is great news for us amateurs who like to read the real stuff.

I'm very glad to see this for two reasons. First, I personally like having access to these articles. But perhaps more important, I think having them publicly available through open access will go a little way to defuse the nonsense about the cultic nature of science. While I'm not so naive as to think that such articles will be widely read, I do think that scientists should make their works more readily available to the public. At a minimum, the public might come to recognize the difference between a work of science and a piece of religious or political propaganda. Every high school student should be required to read and report on at least one real scientific paper before graduation just so he or she will get a feel for the genre if nothing more.
