President Bush Is Correct
We should be worried about the "broader message" sent to the Arab and Muslim world by the claimer over the potential sale of operating rights in several of our east coast ports to Dubai Ports World. Not only is this brouhaha likely to further enrage Muslim sentiments, it could well affect our ability to finance our growing national debt. We need Arab and predominantly Muslim countries to buy all those Treasury Notes that we are printing to support the President's wealthy friends.
But the clamor about this sale is in large part the result of the current Administration's almost unending use of fear to support its often severely misguided war on terror. It is also the result of a constant confusion, propagated by the Administration, between the designations "Arabs," "Muslims," and "religious fanatics." Two of these terms, "Arabs" and "Muslims," are neutral demographic descriptions but not of the same thing. The third, religious fanatics, represents people with an evil intent to impose their will, by any available means, on others.
See the CNN article for the news and Juan Cole's well conceived essay entitled "Bigotry toward Muslims and Anti-Arab Racism Grow in US; Dubai and the Quran" on Informed Comment for more.
