The Joy of Housework Passed
I'm sure there are people who have never ironed a shirt but once upon a time it was hard time consuming work. Here are a couple of flat irons that came into our household by way of Shirley's family.

In fact, this was an ironing system. The handle was removable, so you could have one iron on the stove while you worked with the other. As the one you were using began to cool, you simply returned it to the stove, released the handle and picked up the other iron. Easy, yes. No!
The irons belonged to Shirley's grandmother, Clara Rosetta Troxel (nee Kerch). We're not sure how old they are. But it is likely that Clara Troxel used them before 1900. The Schreiber and Conchar Manufacturing Company of Dubuque, Iowa manufactured them. This type of iron is sometimes called a sad iron. We use them for doorstops.

Did you put water in them or were they solid iron?

Except for a small hollow for the handle mechanism, they are solid iron. I asked Shirley if water was ever put in that hollow and she said "no." But she never used them herself.
