Goodbye John Trever
Jim Davila reports the death of John Trever. You can get more details on Jim's blog. While I didn't know Trever very well, he was a bit of a fixture around the Claremont Graduate School and School of Theology during my last couple of years there. He was a fellow of the American Schools of Oriental Research in Jerusalem in 1947 when the first of the Dead Sea Scrolls were brought in. John Trever wrote numerous books and articles on the Scrolls and related issues.
William Brownlee told an abnormally interesting story about why John Trever was the first scholar to see the scrolls and he, Brownlee, was the second and not the other way around. Both were at what is now called the Albright Institute at the time. But this is not the appropriate time to repeat it. Suffice it to say that luck is a factor in many of life's endeavors. Skill and luck together can lead to very good things.
