Hiltzik by Some Other Name
While not always agreeing with him, I've tended to like Los Angeles Times columnist Michael Hiltzik. I've quoted him here on Abnormal Interests a couple of times. But I'm not very happy about what I learned of him from Tim Lambert at Deltoid.
It seems that Hilzik has been using a pseudonym to simulate third party support for his own positions while commenting on various blogs. Hilzik has admitted to it. After all he was caught rather red handed. But he has also said that this wasn't deceptive. It was!
Using a pseudonym is not in itself deceptive. While I prefer that people be forthright about who they are and what their views are, I understand why some bloggers, for example, want to remain anonymous. But to use a pseudonym in support of your own position, to reference your real name in the third person, that is deceptive. Hiltzik should pay a price for this deception and apparently, he has.
