In Which I Engage in Wild Poorly Founded Speculation

I don't normally do this kind of thing. In fact, I don't normally approve of it when others do it. But it being a slow blogging day and there being a lot of unfinished business in the news that will need to wait until next week, I thought I would go out on a limb. I hereby abnormally predict that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald or his office will announce early next week that Karl Rove has been indicted on a charges of perjury (at a minimum) and that President Bush's speech on using the National Guard to protect our southern border which is planned for Monday evening is designed to provide a political smoke screen to defuse the news of Rove's indictment and little more.

First, the sometimes reliable Truthout • Issues claims in today's posting that Rove was actually indicted yesterday. The Truthout • Issues reporter, Jason Leopold, gives enough details to make a plausible if circumstantial case. Second, the President has seldom shown any real interest in sealing the borders. With his poll numbers beginning to cut into his hardcore constituency, he needs to do something to divert attention from the host of failed policies and persons. Announcing a program that will be opposed by many state governors will provide exactly what the President wants: immediate cover from bad news concerning Rove and someone to blame when the border program fails. A perfect policy.

The first part of my prediction will be confirmed or disconfirmed by Tuesday evening or, if you wish to extend charity, Wednesday morning. The second part of my prediction is almost untestable but conforms well with past experience. In order to test it we would need to be privy to White House political and policy planning. I promise to eat crow if I am wrong on the first part and if wrong on it, then I am likely wrong on the second part as well and will say so. If I am correct, I reserve the right to crow.
