Ken Lay, Still Playing the Christian Card

In an impromptu news conference Ken Lay, founder of Enron, had this to say about his convictions on six counts of conspiracy and fraud by the jury and four separate additional counts of fraud and making false statements by the judge.

. . . Certainly, we're surprised, I think probably more appropriately to say we're shocked. Certainly, this was not the outcome we expected. I firmly believe that I am innocent of the charges against me. As I have said from day one, I still firmly believe that as of this day

But despite what happened today, I am still a very blessed man. I have on my left this beautiful lady that's my wife. I have a very warm and loving Christian family that supports me and a lot of friends including some out in there audience - right now.

And most of all we believe that God in fact is in control and indeed, he does work all things for good for those who love the Lord. And we love our Lord and ultimately all of these things will work for good. . . [Transcribed from CNN video]

While I have questions about the sincerity of this statement, I transcribed it for quite another reason. My concern is the appropriateness of his statement. I'm sure that some of those who were victims of Enron's management also "loved the Lord." But I'm not so sure that those people think that all things are for good in this case. Perhaps it would have been better if Lay had loved the Lord a little less and his fellow man a little more.
