Playing the Illegal Alien Card Against Library Improvements!

California will be holding a primary election on June 6. The big issue involves choosing who will run for governor on the Democratic ticket against Arnold Schwarzenegger. But in addition to selecting candidates for many other state offices and for both the state and federal legislature, there are two initiatives on the ballot. One of them in a bond issue to fund various improvements in our public library system. The other would publicly fund an expansion of the preschool program.

Because I worry that voter initiatives are almost always bad legislation, I will likely vote against both of these issues. However, the NO on Proposition 81, the library initiative, have used a tactic in their statement in the Official Voter Information Guide that may cause me to vote for the initiative because I hate this tactic more than I worry that the measure may be bad legislation. Here is the complete summary argument against Proposition 81,

Free spending politicians have misspent our money. We should not spend $9 billion a year on welfare for illegal aliens, and then borrow money for libraries. A no vote forces free spending politicians to cut welfare for illegal aliens to pay for our libraries. Vote No on Proposition 81. [emphasis added]

They have even more to say about illegal aliens in the longer presentation against Proposition 81.

There is absolutely nothing about welfare of illegal aliens in the library initiative! While I would like to think that we here in California provide welfare to all those in need for reasons of morality, the fact is we provide welfare to illegal aliens because the courts force us to. There is absolutely nothing the legislators or the governor can do about it and the authors of this disingenuous statement know it.

Robert Greene, an editorial writer for The Los Angeles Times has a good article on this misuse of the Official Voter Information Guide.

I agree with your concern about the misuse of the ballot argument employed by those who oppose Prop 81.

But I implore you to vote for Prop. 81 because without PUBLIC LIBRARIES, we lose an important tool for liberty. Remember, Hitler burned books because he did not want people to know the truth when they read his propaganda. Libraries hold keys to truth and therefore, democracy. To help people know the truth, support Prop 81 which will give us more libraries.

Thank you.
