Save Money; Buy a Book
As part of the same project that has already cost me $58.20 ($40.00 in parking fines), I was thinking of going to UCLA to take a look at the ever popular Civil and Kennedy, "Middle Babylonian Grammatical Texts," in Materials for the Sumerian Lexicon, Supplementary series, 1 (see below). My local research library does not have the "Supplementary series."
So before I jumped in the car, I thought I'd do a little math.
Going to UCLA
Parking at UCLA $6.00
Gas (47.5 miles each way) at $3.25 per gallon and 25 MPH $12.35
(Truthfully, I don't know what my mileage is and it could be overstated here.)
Lunch along the way - $5.00
Risk of parking fine for parking in the wrong place (25% of $40.00) - $10.00
Total cost with risk of parking fine - $33.35
Cost of book at Eisenbrauns
Book - $28.00
Shipping - $4.95
Total Cost of Book - $32.95
Because I cannot go to UCLA until Wednesday at the earliest, the two or three additional days wait should not try my patience too much and I'll have another book on the shelf rather than warm memories of spending a few quality moments with one. And I will not do any incremental additional damage to the environment.
Frankly, this is not the kind of book I would normally buy. It is highly specialized and I'll bet I'll use it very sparingly to put the best possible spin on the situation. What really worries me is that before Wednesday comes, I will find that I need to look at another book that I can only get at UCLA and it will cost $150.00 at Eiserbrauns if they have it at all.
