Some Good Advice to Conservatives

The current record of Washington Republicans is so bad that, without a drastic change in direction, millions of conservatives will again stay home this November.

And maybe they should. Conservatives are beginning to realize that nothing will change until there's a change in the GOP leadership. If congressional Republicans win this fall, they will see themselves as vindicated, and nothing will get better. [emphasis added]

These are the words of Richard A. Viguerie, a well-known conservative marketing guru, which he wrote for today's Washington Post.

The real problem is that the President and the "Washington Republicans" as a whole have not only betrayed conservatives, they have and are betraying most Americans and in the process betraying what is best and greatest about our country. While I am far from agreeing with everything Viguerie cites in defense of his position, I share with him these undeniable betrayals,

Viguerie has a large number of complains, many of which I strongly disagree with, but the five quoted above are each a betrayal of all Americans and not just conservatives. Why Viguerie didn't mention the blooming budget deficit is beyond me. If there is anything that will cause long-term harm to both businesses and individuals, particularly poor individuals, it is the inflation that will be needed to finance this deficit. The only real hope to keeping this from becoming a widespread disaster that affects everyone is by lowering the budget and increasing taxes. But of course, Viguerie is against rising taxes.

An interesting thing about the first four of the items on which Viguerie and I agree is that they all reflect issues of competence rather than policy. Perhaps the first thing we need is for all of us, conservative or liberal alike, is to go to the polls in November and fire the incompetents and replace them with those who want the best for the country as a whole and not just their equally incompetent but wealthy friends.

Oh yeah, while we are at it, we need to get rid of William Jefferson and all his ethically challenged associates while we are at it.

A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.

At one audiotaped meeting, Rep. William Jefferson D-La., chuckles about writing in code to keep secret what the government contends was his corrupt role in getting his children a cut of a communications company's deal for work in Africa.
