America: Humiliated and Degraded

If you only read one thing today make it the Los Angeles Times front page article "Army Manual to Skip Geneva Detainee Rule." Julian Barnes' piece begins,

The Pentagon has decided to omit from new detainee policies a key tenet of the Geneva Convention that explicitly bans "humiliating and degrading treatment," according to knowledgeable military officials, a step that would mark a further, potentially permanent, shift away from strict adherence to international human rights standards.

The Pentagon and the White House (read Rumsfeld, Cheney and presumably, the President) support the removal of this tenet from the Army Manual. Even if the State Department and others are successful in having it reinstated, the damage is done. The world can be now certain that America has become just another tyrant.

And the supporters of this government call themselves "value voters."

Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and a few other NGOs, have designated June Torture Awareness Month. We've created a blogroll you can join if you're interested. You can find it here. The idea is that everyone is linked to from the blogroll, and in exchange, you discuss torture (as you already do), and link to the Torture Awareness site to help support the NGOs.

There's a lot of bloggers concerned about human rights abuse in the War on Terror. If we coordinate, we can show our support and help Amnesty and HRW make Torture Awareness Month a success.
