It Sure Must be A Slow News Day
What with Israel carrying on a military operation in Gaza, the Supreme Court saying the President over stepped his authority at Guantánamo, not to mention continued mayhem in Iraq and Iran asking of more time to respond to the international proposals on their nuclear program, ABC's Good Morning America had time to air the nonsense about the discovery of Noah's Ark in Iran. I mentioned this "discovery" last week.
The words "crazy," "nonsense," "irresponsible claims" are never uttered in the ABC piece. The closest thing to a critique of this foolishness is the observation that most ark searchers look for it in Turkey and that no one knows what "gopher wood" is. Why waste valuable news time on this stuff? And if there is an answer to that question, why not get a competent archaeologist or Biblical scholar to address the issue?
If you're looking for a reasoned discussion of this, check out afarensis.
I just discovered via Unscrewing the Inscrutable that at least one CBS affiliate had time on Monday's news to air this nonsense also. It was a "Top Story." And they said something that makes it all the crazier and potentially all the more dangerous for the gullible.
DALLAS CBS 11 has news of what could turn out to be one of the biggest discoveries in the history of both archaeology, and Christianity. A group of men, including several north Texans, believes it has found the remains of Noah's Ark, but it's not where most think.
Let's be very clear. This rock formation has nothing to do with archaeology or Christianity or Noah's Ark and everything to do with a small groups of dilettantes (yes, Jim I said it) trying to pull the wool over their own eyes and hoping some others will be blinded in the process. And if you don't believe me just read what one of the deluded told the press,
Bonnema says he knows there will be naysayers, but he believes the discovery will reaffirm others' faith as it did his own.
