Protecting the Delicate Field Archeologist
Joe Cathey hopes to be posting from the renewed Gezer excavations. It seems he is having a little trouble getting started. Here is part of his report from yesterday;
I am sorry that I have not posted as much as I wanted to in this first week. We had a tough first day before the sun shades were put up. However, we are slowly getting used to life here in Gezer. [emphasis added]
Amazing! I remember there being "sun shades" at the Gezer excavations in the early 1970s. They were put up when there was a risk of sun damage to a find under excavation or when a temporary artificial shadow was needed to help photography. The type of find that most often needed such protection was skeletal remains. In other words, we provided sun shades for the dead but not the excavators.
I've already ranted about the living conditions that this new breed of archaeologist are forced to endure and now I learn that they are being deprived of vitamin D from the sun.
