Oh The Horror of it All

The front page of the today's Los Angeles Times features five stories: two on the war in the Near East, one on toxic algae poisoning marine mammals, one on a renewed search for the killer of rapper Biggie Small, and one on, are you ready, a major crisis in the badminton world. Yes, shuttlecocks need to be made of duck feathers rather than goose feathers!

The first mention of Iraq was on page 2 and the first mention of Afghanistan on page 3 and these were nothing more than brief paragraphs. The first real story on Iraq was on page 5. But shuttlecocks made the front page. Sure, you could say that the shuttlecock story was in reality a bird flu story. But read it and tell me that it isn't a badminton story. I have nothing against badminton; there was a time when I enjoyed playing it. But is the effects of bird flu on the manufacture of shuttlecocks really front page material in this world at this time? With an editorial policy that allowed this story to make the front page, it's no wonder that many see an immoral war as a triviality and the "war on terrorism" as something other than a political slogan.
