The Real Deal
What have we come to when an Assistant Director of the FBI has to tell us that an al Qaeda terrorist plot to blow up the tunnel between New Jersey and Manhattan is the "real deal."
Mershon said the plan was "what we believe was the real deal," a scheme involving al Qaeda members on three continents. [CNN]
From what I have read, I have no doubt that this is the real deal. It is great that it was disrupted and that at least some of conspirators are in custody. Job well done. But I wish that Mr. Mershon didn't need to tell us it was the "real deal." All that really tells me is that many such reports are something less than real and I don't like that at all. If our public servants would tell us the truth all the time, then they wouldn't have to tell us that any particular report was the "real deal." We can deal with the truth. Its the lies that do so much harm.

Not that I'm any defender of this administration, with all its lies and repugnancy that we come to expect from these malicious minds, yet isn't it very well possible that he meant it in the context that there are many rumours abroad about Al-Qaeda terrorists, and this one has so much corroborating evidence that it seemed to be a genuine threat? Instead of the false reports coming from Bushco, they're from foreign nobodies with no "real" intention of acting out their sadistic desires?

Chris,
You may well be correct. Your reading is far more charitable than mine is and normally I would favor the more charitable reading. However, we are not working in a normal political environment and I am disinclined to offer charity to this administration. In my view, they have managed to remove the burden of presupposing charitable interpretations.
