A New Blogger on the Net

Kambiz Kamrani, over at Anthopology.net, has an interesting post on the current government in Iran and blogging. Here's a sample,

As an Iranian American, I have seen how outstandingly oppressive and hypocritical the State of Iran has been. One remarkably oppression that comes to mind is the Islamic Republic's assault on blogging. Ever so recently (2004, actually) the government began unjustly imprisoning outspoken bloggers, Arash Sigarchi, Farid Modaressi, and Mojtaba Saminejad for speaking against the regime. The Mullahs escalated their assault on blogging by blocking internet traffic within Iran to popular blogs and blogging services.

Suffice to say, I scratch my head in astonishment on news that the president of the Islamic Republic, Mahmood Ahmadinejad has started his own blog.

[snip]

Shame on you "Supreme Leader" Khamenei on making a mockery on this form of communication and twisting it into your own little power ploy. Shame on you Ahmadinejad for being so easily brainwashed and acting as a puppet for your theocratic overlords. You have disgraced the very foundation on blogging, as being a peoples' movement; one full of passion and personal enterprise, and made it what you need to stay in power.

After seeing the "charm" of Mahmood Ahmadinejad on 60 Minutes last night, this seems a useful corrective at least for bloggers. That doesn't mean that the US or anyone else should attack Iran. It does remind us what we are dealing with.

Please read Kambiz' complete post.
