Adding, Subtracting and Multiplying in Roman Numerals
Mark Chu-Carroll over at Good Math Bad Math tells us how to do it. It's not as hard as you may think; but don't ask about division. He also has a number of other interesting things to say about how roman numerals came about. There's more to counting sheep than simply trying to get to sleep. Ever wonder why a clock face reads IIII rather IV? Mark has some suggestions, two of which students of western religion may find interesting, but no definitive answer. And I don't care what your elementary teachers told you, there is a roman numeral for zero. Give his post a read. Good stuff.
