Just Trying to Be Helpful
One of the more curious things about some people of faith is just how helpful they can be. I use my Baptist friend Jim West as an example. A couple of days ago he advised the Roman Catholic Church to excommunicate twelve women who sought the priesthood in an unsanctioned ordination ceremony in Pittsburgh. He was also kind enough to advise the women to join the Anglicans, the Episcopalians, the Methodists, the Lutherans, the Presbyterians, and the United Church of Christ where they would be welcomed into the clergy.
Today, he accuses my other Baptist friend, Joe Cathey, of being a heretic! He advises him, by way of demonstrating his supposed heresy, to improve his skills as a Biblical theologian or, more accurately, to improve his prooftexting skills.
One of the many wonderful things about being a secular humanist is that I can say that can't understand why anyone would want to be a priest in a church that is stuck in the Middle Ages on the issue of women (among a host of other issues) and that while I agree with Joe Cathey that we should not precipitously withdraw from Iraq, I think his reasons are simply wrong.
Oh, yeah, another thing, I don't feel compelled to engage in a prooftexting war while real wars, one morally justified, one morally unjustified and one I'm not so clear about, rage on.
