Planning for and Pontificating About War with Iran

Juan Cole at Informed Comment quotes retired CIA analyst of Arab affairs Ray Close at considerable length on "The Building War on Iran." Close's analysis and Cole's interspersed comments make fascinating and frightening reading. Whatever your position, this post should modify it to some degree.

I guess in terms of the technical data, I am not surprised at all. There were Iranian Ph.D. students I worked with in Engineering around 1980 who were very intelligent. The only thing that he left out was a discussion of the chances of the Iranians getting enough firepower in the vicinity of Saudi refineries to shut them down and send the whole world eocnomy into a free fall.

The other part is the projection of Iranian madness onto president Bush. My view on the CIA is that it is only competent (and just barely) to run clandestine ops against a US president, so this part doesn't surprise either. Nothing modified.
