Complain Bitterly but Please Don't Threaten
John in DC of AMERICABlog reports something that I find disturbing. The Senate Democratic leadership has sent a letter to Mr. Robert A. Iger, President and CEO of Walt Disney Company justifiably complaining about the upcoming ABC broadcast of The Path to 9/11. I complained about it myself yesterday and suggested that it was in the public interest for ABC to pull the program.
However, in this case, I think the Senate Democratic leadership has overstepped the bounds of propriety in much of the language of their letter. As John correctly says, "It is FILLED with veiled threats, both legal and legislative, against Disney." The wording implies that Disney's broadcasting license is in danger if they air this miniseries. That constitutes an effort by these Senators in their official capacity to restrict free speech.
I hope that the Democrats achieve a majority in the House and the Senate. One of the many reasons for this hope is to stop the use of governmental coercion that has become such a common commodity in the current regime. I am not so naive as to think that either party is without guilt when it comes to using their power to threaten those with whom they disagree. I did hope that their equality in this arena was not as obvious as this letter makes me think.
Let me be clear, I think Disney should pull this miniseries even if it has half the errors and out right lies that have been noted. I also think we desperately need a major change in both the legislative and the executive branches of government. What we don't need are restrictions on free speech.
