Friday Pot Blogging

Today's pot is another small bowl. This one is from the late Iron II period and comes from the south of Palestine.

Iron Age IIB Small Bowl

This bowl is 11.4 cm in diameter at the rim. Typical of the period it has a wheel burnished red slip on the interior that continues, in the case of the example about, half way down its exterior sides. This decorative element can be seen better in the more direct side view below.

This bowl is comparable to one from Beth Mirsim A that Amiran, 204, plate 65, #15, illustrates. The absolute chronology of Iron Age Palestine is under intense discussion at this time. Realizing that the earlier date is in dispute, one would not be too far off using a range from ~840 BCE to 586 BCE for the date of this bowl. The Beth Mirsim parallel would argue for the first century in this range.

I don't know when this bowl was broken and repaired. It was certainly repaired in modern times. The workmanship of the repair is fairly good. Among other things, that means I didn't do it.
