"I Am a Deceiver and a Liar."
The words of Ted Haggard are no doubt true. The question is, "Who did he deceive and to whom did he lie?" His wife, his congregation and the public are the all too obvious answers. But had he been true to himself, he would have never put himself in a position to deceive and lie to them. Notice his words, "There's a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I have been warring against it for all of my adult life." For all practical purposes, Haggard says that he is a gay man who believes that this "part" of his life is a moral failing. This belief itself is a moral failing. What pain this belief has inflected on Haggard, his family and so many others.
Do, I feel sorry for him? Not exactly. Instead of getting married and propagating the very beliefs that caused him pain, he had other choices. But I do think him a victim of an ancient immoral belief that should be held in contempt.
