Settling Theological Debates
Benjamin Myers at Faith and Theology tells the story of a couple of theological debates between Francis Gomarus and Matthias Martinius at The Synod of Dort (1618-19). Gomarus challenged Martinius to a duel. The argument was over the pressing problem of "whether predestination is an 'infralapsarian' or a 'supralapsarian' decree." Check out Myers' blog if you're not exactly sure which side of this issue you are on.
There might be a tendency to laugh at the prospect of grown men dueling over something like this if it weren't for one simple fact. There is really no better way to solve theological debates without one side simply caving in. Perhaps flipping a coin might work as well and be somewhat more politically correct. Lacking premises based on evidence, there is no way that logic alone can resolve a theological debate. As I've said before, I have never understood what the core subject of a theological debate was. If you say "God," I only ask you to help me decide if freshwater mermaids are the same species as saltwater mermaids and which of the two are the better.
