Dennett on the Evaporation of the Mystique of Religion
Aydin Örstan over at Snail's Tales directs us to a reflection by Daniel Dennett, Professor of Philosophy at Tufts University, on what makes him optimistic. It begins,
I’m so optimistic that I expect to live to see the evaporation of the powerful mystique of religion. I think that in about twenty-five years almost all religions will have evolved into very different phenomena, so much so that in most quarters religion will no longer command the awe it does today.
His view ties in nicely with Steven Weinberg's "criticism" of Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion. Dennett is more optimistic about this than I am and while he clearly worries about it, he may make Dawkins' mistake with regard to Islam. His reflections are well worth considering.
I found several other reflections on the cause for optimism published by Edge which are also of abnormal interest.
Well, Shirley and I are off to Church our Thursday lunch group.
