Halton on Rollston on Scribal Schools

Charles Halton at Awilum has a very good post on Christopher Rollston's paper, "Scribal Education in Ancient Israel: The Old Hebrew Epigraphic Evidence," from the most recent BASOR. Get over there and give it a read.

Charles makes an important point that scribal schools need not have been in a dedicated building. A couple that we know of from Ugarit, for example, have more the character of the private residences of master scribes and the one at Amarna seems to have been associated with an official Egyptian government "Department of State" correspondence management and response facility. To be sure, less formal settings than these could constitute scribal schools. In my view, all that is required is that one or more master scribes maintain and train apprentices/junior scribes. There is a large variety of venues where that activity could take place.
