The animal pictured below, the cat not the stuffed thing, consents to live in our house and allows us to feed and groom him.
But does he know his name? We normally call him Soc but his full proper name, the one on the records at the vet's office, is Socrates. He answers to whatever he cares to answer to. He will on occasion respond to names in the general semantic range of Soc, Socrates, good boy, little boy, big boy, big guy, No!, "no claws," "that hurts," "not on the furniture" and "stop it."
By the way, "little guy" is reserved for this little guy.
This is was a small stuffed hedgehog, Soc's favorite toy. "Little guy" appears to be the only other human expression that Soc will acknowledge. Soc does love to play with Little Guy. Little Guy does not respond to anything but he willingly cooperates in much.

Is Soc as intelligent as his namesake?

I'm fairly sure he is not as intelligent as Socrates of old but I often think him wiser than those serve as his staff.
